What I share when speaking to groups
I’ve been called many things over the years: professional organizer, senior advisor, real estate professional, downsizing coach, even “miracle worker” (that one makes me blush, but I’ll take it). All of these roles really came from the same place in my heart: I love helping people make sense of their space, their stuff, and their next chapter in life.
I spend much of my time one-on-one with clients, sorting closets, decluttering basements, gently guiding big decisions, but I’ve also discovered something powerful: when you get a group of people together to talk about these topics, magic happens.
People learn.
They laugh.
They see themselves in the stories.
Most importantly, they leave feeling lighter, braver, and more equipped to take action.
That’s why I make myself available as a speaker for groups: community organizations, churches, senior centers, book clubs, caregiver support groups, business lunch-and-learns, you name it.
If your group would benefit from guidance on organization, downsizing, decision-making, or housing options, I’d be delighted to deliver one of my signature presentations (listed below) or even design something new.
My talks usually run about 40 minutes (the sweet spot between “that was so interesting” and “I think my stomach is growling”), but I can stretch or shrink the time depending on what works best for the group.
No matter the topic discussed or how long we discuss it, your group can expect to walk away with fresh perspective, useful takeaways, and the relief that comes from shared laughter.
Topics I’ve Loved Sharing
Over time, I’ve spoken on a variety of topics within these frameworks. Each one is rooted in real-life experiences I’ve had with clients, families, and my own adventures in decluttering and downsizing. Here are some highlights from my speaking repertoire:
Space, Stuff, and Speaking Up
This talk is my signature. It’s the one that people tell me sticks with them for weeks or even months. We take a look at three very human things: the space we live in (and the space we plan to live in), the stuff we fill it with, and the value of speaking up about what we want.
I share stories of clients who finally cleared out rooms they hadn’t entered in years and others who had to find their voice when adult children or well-meaning friends offered lots of opinions. There’s a lot of laughter, more than a few knowing nods, and sometimes even tears when people realize they’re not alone in the overwhelm. The biggest takeaway? Downsizing isn’t just about the stuff, it’s about reclaiming your voice and your choices.
Downsizing With Heart
This talk gets to the core of my life’s work, because often the hardest part is simply naming the problem. Downsizing isn’t just about sorting stuff, it’s about facing the emotions tied to it, and that’s a big part of the help I offer. We look at the three kinds of clutter that pile up over the years: lazy clutter (the things we haven’t dealt with simply because it takes time and effort), identity clutter (items that reflect a past version of ourselves), and sentimental or guilt clutter (belongings tied to people, places, or moments that carry deep meaning).
Tidying a shelf is not difficult. The tough part is asking:
What parts of my past am I holding onto and do they still serve me today?
Am I keeping this because it reflects who I used to be, or who I am now?
Am I honoring memories, or holding onto guilt?
I share strategies for making these decisions easier, like how to pace yourself so you don’t burn out, how to deal with emotionally charged categories like heirlooms and photographs, and how to involve family without losing your voice in the process. Attendees often say this talk helps them finally understand why letting go feels so hard and gives them both the permission and the tools to move forward with a lighter heart.
Decluttering with Downsizing in Mind
This one always gets people listening and jotting down notes, because it’s practical. We talk about how decluttering is different when you’re looking ahead to a move, whether that’s next year or ten years from now.
It’s not just “tidy up a shelf.” It’s asking:
What do I want my next home to feel like?
Which belongings will serve me in that space?
What deserves a place in my future, and what belongs in my past?
I share strategies for tackling big categories, like paperwork, photographs, and heirlooms (the “sticky” stuff), along with practical steps for pacing yourself so you don’t burn out halfway through. People often tell me this talk makes them feel both relieved (“I can do this a little at a time!”) and motivated (“I don’t want my kids to be stuck doing this for me!”).
Why Decisions Are Hard
If you’ve ever stared at a pile of stuff and thought, I’ll deal with that tomorrow, you’re not alone and you’re not lazy. This talk dives into the brain science behind decision-making.
I break down why our brains get tired, why emotions make choices harder, and why it’s normal to freeze up when faced with too many options. Since I’m not a neuroscientist (surprise!), I explain it in plain English, with plenty of humor. Think less “academic lecture” and more “coffee with a friend who read the science so you don’t have to.”
This talk always sparks a lot of conversation afterward. People love realizing, “Oh! That’s why I can help my friend make decisions, but can’t make them myself.” Once you understand the why, the how gets much easier.
Real Estate Misconceptions, Myths, and Market Truths for Seniors
As a licensed REALTOR™, I can’t resist tackling the myths that swirl around real estate. From “spring is the only time to sell” to “Zillow knows everything,” I unpack the misconceptions with stories from the field.
Audiences are often surprised at what’s changed in the housing market, especially for older adults considering a move. I talk about what really adds value to a home (spoiler: not that brand-new carpet you’re tempted to install) and what matters most to buyers today.
People leave with a clearer picture of the housing landscape and a few laughs about the tall tales they’ve heard from neighbors.
Serving Senior Clients: What Every Professional Should Know
This talk is designed for professionals, financial planners, attorneys, insurance advisors, and others who work with senior clients but may not realize the emotional and logistical layers behind those clients’ decisions. Downsizing, moving, or planning for future care isn’t just a transaction; it’s a deeply personal process tied to identity, family dynamics, and sometimes decades of history.
I share insights from my work as a professional organizer, senior advisor, and REALTOR™ to help professionals better understand the barriers their clients face and how to support them with empathy and clarity.
We talk about what slows decision-making, how to frame conversations around sensitive topics, and how collaboration between professionals can make transitions smoother. The goal? To give professionals practical tools and a new perspective so they can serve senior clients not just with expertise, but with heart.
What Audiences Can Expect
I wear many hats; organizer, advisor, REALTOR™ but at heart, I’m a storyteller. When I speak, my goal is to make it feel like a conversation, not a lecture. You can expect stories, lots of them, because nothing sticks quite like hearing about the woman who discovered three breadmakers in her basement or the gentleman who held onto every receipt from the past 40 years “just in case.”
I also make sure people leave with practical tips they can use right away. Whether it’s a trick for getting started on decluttering, a checklist for touring a senior living community, or a way to frame a tough conversation with family, my talks always include tools you can put into practice the very same day.
One of the things I love most is tailoring my presentations. If your group has a specific interest, say, “helping aging parents downsize” or “what to do when siblings disagree on next steps” I can create a talk that addresses exactly that.
My experience gives me a wide lens on these challenges, and I enjoy weaving those perspectives together to meet the unique needs of each audience. I’ve spoken to rooms full of caregivers, to professional groups who want to better serve older clients, to adult children of seniors preparing to downsize, and to seniors themselves who are just beginning to ask, “What’s next for me?” Each group brings its own energy and questions, and I love adapting to make the time valuable for them.
What keeps me saying “yes” to speaking?
It’s the conversations afterward, when someone says, “That’s exactly what I needed to hear today.” Those moments remind me that sharing what I’ve learned can make tough transitions feel lighter and even hopeful.
If your group could use encouragement, clarity, and maybe a few laughs about the messy, meaningful business of downsizing and decision-making, I’d be honored to join you. Let’s create a talk that leaves your audience feeling equipped, inspired, and maybe even ready to tackle that basement when they get home.
